Sushmita Mazumdar

Sushmita Mazumdar works across stories, book arts, and mixed media, exploring memories of home, heritage, and migration from India. In 2013 she opened Studio Pause, a community space for art and stories in Arlington, Virginia. Mixing into her work the community who collaborate, discuss, and respond. Sushmita has created projects for the Smithsonian Institution, Arlington Arts, Alexandria City Public Schools, DC Public Libraries, and Alexandria Black History Museum. A docent at the National Museum of Asian Art since 2000, Sushmita was awarded Arlington County’s Woman of Vision award in 2018, and in 2020, was featured in Women’s Work: Then & Now, an exhibit profiling women who have influenced the community. In 2019, she was appointed one of 13 Arts Commissioners for Virginia.
